ST MARY'S ROAD SURGERY NEWBURY

TRAINER – GRAHAM STIFF

WELCOME TO ST MARYS ROAD SURGERY, NEWBURY. WE AIM TO PROVIDE AN ENTHUSIASTIC, FRIENDLY AND SUPPORTIVE SETTING FOR GP REGISTRARS TO DEVELOP INTO INDEPENDENT PRACTITIONERS

PRACTICE MEDICAL STRUCTURE

St Marys Road Surgery has been established since the turn of the last century providing continuing care for its patients. It is also a long established training practice and we aim to provide a friendly, happy, informative and resourceful working environment for GP registrars to develop into independent practitioners.

The practice is currently made up of three male and three female partners, two of whom work half time. All the partners have clinical assistantships or do a variety of external work. At present we provide Hospital Practitioner posts in Palliative Care and Clinical Assistant Cover to our local Minor Injuries Unit.

LOCATION

Our practice is situated near the centre of Newbury, an old market town that is now part of an economically thriving area. It has a geographically well defined practice area covering the town and a number of outlying villages and farms. The town is to the west of Reading with easy road and rail links to London, Oxford, the South Coast and the West Country.

We are lucky to have easy access to the local countryside. There are two small theatres in the town and there is a thriving Spring Music Festival each year!

PREMISES

Our practice building is purpose built and has its own off street parking. We have a dedicated consultation room for the Registrar, which is small but yours to personalise as you will!

The practice is fully equipped with access to a video recorder, ECG machine, defibrillator, audiometer, spirometer, nebulisers, fetal heart monitors, glucometers and a full range of equipment for minor surgery. We have bought a new colour flow doplar ultrasound machine for general abdominal, obstetric and cardiovascular work.

The library is located in the common room so that access is available to staff at all times. Acquisitions are made on an ad hoc basis by recommendation from all members of staff. Electronic access to journals is now the norm and we no longer keep paper copies of the BMJ, BJGP or Evidence Based Medicine. All the clinical computers have a home web page with links to Medline, Bandolier, The Cochrane Database, Best Evidence, the BMJ and BJGP as well as our own web pages and PCT sites.

COMPUTERS & IT

The practice has upgraded to the EMIS clinical record system in the past four years. All working areas are served by networked PCs and printers with permanent online email and internet access.

The system is used by all staff and the whole practice works from the appointments system. Lab-links allow us direct electronic access to the local pathology services and all letters are scanned onto the system. All the doctors consult with out paper notes and we are actively moving towards becoming a paperless practice.

COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

The practice is situated on the boundary of the catchment areas of several general hospitals including units in Reading, Oxford and Basingstoke. Consultants from Reading and Oxford hold outpatients in our Community Hospital and our relationship with these consultants is greatly enhanced as a result. The facilities at the hospital are a valuable teaching resource that can be accessed in a friendly atmosphere without competition from other junior doctors!

Our local Community Hospital plays a very important part in the local community and our work. The hospital has both daybed and inpatient beds for surgery, gynaecology, ENT ophthalmic and maxilofacial surgery. There are two palliative care 'suites'. We have admitting rights to the GP 'medical' beds in the hospital and provide medical cover for the nurse led Minor Injuries Unit.

STAFF

We have a full range of attached staff. There are 4 community nurses and 3 health visitors, all of whom are based within the building. We have an attached midwife who consults in the building and also have an attached CPN and social workers. We employ a full time practice manager, 12 reception and 4 office staff, 3 practice nurses, a cleaner and a gardener!

We hold regular lunchtime meetings with all members of the primary care team to exchange views on a formal basis but all try to meet up at the end of the morning over a cup of coffee in the common room for more informal discussion.

We regard our Registrars as a very welcome addition to a friendly practice team. During your time with us we encourage you to be involved in all the activities going on in the practice, both medical and social! We hope that the experiences you gain with us will give you some of the enthusiasm that we have for good General Practice.

Please do contact us to talk and arrange a visit.
